Singles Face Retirement Anxiety Amid Financial Uncertainty
A Nationwide Retirement Institute survey reveals stark disparities between single and coupled investors. Nearly 25% of unmarried respondents have abandoned retirement plans altogether, while 21% express outright fear of retiring alone. The data paints a troubling picture of financial preparedness—only 20% of single non-retirees believe they'll accumulate sufficient savings.
"Single investors lack the safety net of dual incomes," notes Nationwide's Rona Guymon. Nearly half estimate needing $600,000 for comfortable retirement, yet fewer than 20% currently hold $500,000 in savings. The structural disadvantage extends to risk management, with singles demonstrating lower adoption of financial hedging strategies compared to their partnered counterparts.
